Of course, Epica have a second singer in Mark Jansen who favours death growls as opposed to the ‘proper’ singing of Marco Hietala, so there is a very different feel between the two acts. They are also more downtuned and there is the feeling that this a guitar based-band first and foremost, as opposed to keyboard-based. This is a real shame, as the album as a whole is an incredible piece of work, much more metallic than the band to which they are most often compared, Nightwish, with the twin guitars locked in and riffing hard. Singer Simone Simons has a quite stunning voice, but to be honest she is sometimes drained out by the choir and also by the rest of the band so that she actually loses some of the impact.

The production on this album seems to have brought everything together at the highest volume possible, so much so that the listener is quite drained by all of it. Very few songs here that I revisit, so that's why this gets bottom place for me.Here is one word to describe this 2014 album that rises clearly above all others, “Intensity”.

I like a lot of the songs and concepts, lots of great hooks and riffs, but lots of time was spent on forgettable songs too. It's undoubtedly more refined than their early work, but the guitar tones and really pulled back symphonic elements made the album feel kind of empty. That said, it's a better album than it sometimes gets credit for.

Less growls and more slow building songs, some of which didn't quite land for me (Trios Vierges, Another Me, etc). Interesting lyrics and concepts here with good orchestral composition is why I still revisit it.ĬTO was a more refined step, but lacking some of the raw feeling of the first album. TPA was a great start for Epica, but the sound is pretty bare bones compared to today. The B-sides are great and think a few of them should have been swapped to improve the latter part of the album. TQE is good, but the back half of the album has some slower pacing and a few tracks that don't quite hold up to the rest. Possible this leaps over THP with more listens. Haven't looked at the lyrics yet, but don't really care for Epica's lyrics in the most recent albums.

Loved the Skeleton Key, KoH prt 3, Code of Life, and Rivers. Solid top to bottom, but lacks some of that extra innovative spice that THP had. Edge of the Blade seemed out of place after the intro, but very little to fault here. Once Upon a Nightmare is the standout, but tracks like Divide and Conquer, Ascension, and the title track were also great! The lyrics don't mean much to me, but there is extra polish here that I love. THP was so varied and interesting that I loved it. A couple forgettable songs actually don't pull this down for me. Obsessive Devotion is a classic, the Embrace that Smothers tracks are some of the strongest lyrically, and the title track is a sweeping epic. TDC has it's flaws, but the concept and lyrics connected with me as someone who had just left my religious faith, so it's a personal album for me.

Kingdom of Heaven, Tides of Time, and the title track were incredible, plus lyrical standouts from Our Destiny, Resign to Surrender, and tons of great music up and down the album. DYU remains Epica's best, musically and lyrically their peak.
